My rampant speculation is that unless they drive past you and do a check in the rear view mirror, that if they don't see a front plate they just assume it's an "out of state" vehicle. I certainly can't blame you for not putting one on, as there's just no way to do it in a manner that doesn't detract from the beautiful looks of the front of the vehicle.
