We've finally got it in writing folks -- FCA has announced that the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth will be sold in North American and will make its US debut at the New York Auto Show this week.

The Abarth version of the 124 Spider uses the same 160-hp, 184 lb-ft of torque, turbo-charged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, but it will also be equipped with an updated quad-tipped exhaust system that will make the roadster give off a hair-raising growl. It will also be outfitted with a Sport mode that will change the way the engine, automatic transmission, electric power steering and dynamic stability control behave to give a more performance-oriented driving experience.

Bilstein front and rear shocks will enhance handling, and Brembo brakes and calipers will look nice and give the driver even more control.

On the design front, the 124 Spider Abarth gets aggressive with revised front and rear fascias and black side-sills. The wheels, header, mirror cover and roll bar are all done in Gun Metal Aluminum, and the interior dons red contrast stitching, a black matte instrument panel, and unique gear shift knob.

No word yet on the release date for the 124 Abarth Spider, but we might hear something at the New York Auto Show reveal.

We've got official news on the specs for the US model now, and there really aren't any surprises.

Yep, the Abarth-tuned 124 Spider will offer the same exact 160 horsepower turbocharged inline-four found in the base-model 124 (and derived from the Fiat 500 Abarth's engine). Basically, this is Fiat's version of the Miata Club. That means you get a sport suspension with Bilstein dampers, a mechanical limited-slip differential, and optional Brembo brakes and Recaro seats. And, for the record, the Fiat's 160-horse, 184 lb.-ft turbo engine still makes five more horsepower and 36 more lb.-ft. of torque compared to Mazda's latest Miata.

You can order your 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth with a 6-speed manual or paddle-shift automatic, but we highly recommend you get the manual. A sports exhaust and vintage rally car-inspired looks complete the Abarth package.
Pricing is expected to be set somewhere close to the base Miata which is $28,600.
