So I know - objectively - the Type R is quiet probably brilliant, but good God what is wrong with Honda’s designers? It’s as though they finished the design half way through their shift but felt obliged to keep working until the end of the day, so they kept adding bits.

It’s unappealing to look at, that’s for sure so regardless of how well it performs...it’s still a hatch, not a convertible and won’t give you the same fun factor or aesthetics.

I guess I'm the odd man out because I actually really like the look of the car. I also loved my Juke though so my opinion may be invalid, haha!

Meh. Not a big fan of the Hot Hatchback segment anyway. I don't really get the appeal.
They make a lot more sense in other parts of the world. When you see a Mustang on the road in Britain, it seems enormous.

I loved my hot hatches in Scotland. In fairly quick succession, I had a Fiesta Zetec S (OK - that one was more warm than hot, but drove brilliantly), a Mk 3 Clio Williams and Corolla T-Sport (that was my attempt at a grown-up's car). Loads of fun, practical and relatively cheap to run (other than insurance).

Here is the thing ……. Earlier this year I was parking at a “roadhouse” (I believe that is what you guys call service centres out on the highway). I parked next to a new Civic R, then me and Ms124 went about our business. On returning a few people had gathered around my car. My thoughts at the time;

1. Bloody HeII !! That Civic is one fugly car. I thought it may have looked nicer in the flesh, but I was wrong

2. Bloody HeII !! Its enormous…….what ever happened the much loved “little Civic” of the past

3. “Wat da fuc’ is that ?” – that was Ms124's reaction, she was astonished when told it was a Civic as her first car was a 86 Civic

4. What has happened to Honda ?? – it used to design really nice cars (the possible exception is the new S660 – saw a few in Japan late last year, they were quite nice and a better competitor to the 124)

5. My car drew more attention that the Civic – either, the people found it more attractive ….or maybe, the people were averting their eyes from the Civic

I have a “hot hatchback” and they have there place.
I like my dads 124 but with the driving I do for work it’s nice having the extra space and still be able to zip around.
And there is something to be said about a “sleeper” hot hatch of which the type R isn’t.
I like seeing the looks on people’s faces when my mini pulls on there Uber saloons.>:)

Now that I think about it, I do recall wanting a 1st gen Scirocco as a young guy in the late ‘70’s. I imagine that’s the equivalent of today’s Hot Hatch.

Americans have never got hot-hatches but then again, they’ve really not been exposed to the best of them. I’ve had a couple of interesting ones and they were pretty awesome...

Really wish hot Renault’s were available in the US. The new Alpine A110 looks fantastic.

Or all that hot if we’re honest.
Disagree ...... maybe on a "numbers" assessment but as for the "fun factor" - hard to beat

Still rate my A5oo as more "fun" than my A124. Cannot say why, it just is> Even after 6 and half years I still look at her and think..."Phoaw, you are looking hawt today !!)

TBH if the A124 was a not a convertible I very probably would not have purchased it
