So looks like it is happining with the Mazdas. People have hands on the equipment and it looks like it would fit our cars too. Just have to hope Fiat push this as well as we will need the firmware!

Yesterday I was over a Mazda dealer(friend was looking for the CX5) and chatting with the salesman, he said car play would be coming soon and it would cover cars from 2014 and on.
He told me that the GPS Nav. SD card, fits all models. Even suggest to my friend to buy it on Ebay cheaper than the dealer $4xx.

Interesting he found my Abarth more appealing than the MX5, by the way the sales person was Italian. LOL

My dealer told me the same thing, haha.

I don’t understand why people want CarPlay so badly. I have it in my Charger, it’s useless, I don’t use it.

Based in that thread, seems like it may be both a hardware and software update. People are thinking about $500 installed. Obviously nothing official yet, just speculation.

The hardware will just be a usb hub that includes the Apple certified CarPlay chip. This has been the case with all of the other mfgs that have added CarPlay support retroactively. The two cars in familiari with that did this were under $50 for the port. One was a bit of work to get to it to replace the original unit, the other toook minutes.

Hope you are right.. Guess it depends on how much of the dash needs to be disassembled. I am sure any dealer is going to Charge at least 1 hr Labor + parts.

I can't run Android Auto without removing the music USB stick and satnav SD card first because it appears to run out of memory. I wouldn't be surprised if the official upgrade includes a head unit with more RAM, it'll just need another chip putting in but to do it they'll probably replace the whole head unit for an upgraded one.

I use it all the time in my KIA (who offered as a retrofit for free 6 months after I got my 2016 Sorrento) and in rentals. Among other things, the navigation is better than most OEM nav systems, and (in particular with regards the 124) - includes traffic data.

Also, SIRI understands my Scottish accent. Mazda connect most definitely doesn't :)

You can't run WAZE through Carplay. You can, however, run it through Android Auto.

For those who are unsure on what is required to enable Car Play then for the MX-5 it requires the following parts:
- TK78-66-9U0C AUX Hub
- C830-V6-60Z Cable Set
- C830-V6-693 Foam

In essence this replaces the current USB Aux Hub. In addition you need the updated firmware. The MX-5 installation instructions can be found at: https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=675057

The 124 requirements and instructions will presumably be the same - other than a Fiat specific firmware - albeit I've not seen any formal confirmation yet.

For those who have ordered a 2019 124 (or MX-5) in North America then the bad news is that it looks like the currently built 2019 cars have the old USB Aux Hub rather than the Car Play compatible one. I am basing this assumption by looking at photos of the 2019 MX-5 and 124s arriving at North American dealers. The new USB Aux Hub looks slightly different as the USB ports are visibly numbered 1 & 2, whereas in the old version they are not.

One of the photos on this 2019 124 Lusso clearly shows the USB Aux Hub area for example: https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/743304746/overview/

Disappointing but not too surprising. Let's hope that as the year progresses they start building 2019 124s with the new USB Aux Hub.

A slight correct to my above post. It is not that the USB ports are numbered, it is that one of them is annotated with an icon of a phone to show that it is a 2.1 Amp charge outlet and for Car Play mirroring.

You can see this in the photo (credit to ASH8 from Miata forum)

Either way, the initial batch of 2019 MX-5/Miata and 124s arriving in the USA do not have the new USB hub, hence will need this item replaced in order to support CarPlay.

thanks

I reached out to Fiat USA to inquire whether any news on, or when Apple Car Play will be offered on the 2019 Fiat 124 Abarth since it is now beginning to be offered in the Miata/MX-5 and other Mazda cars with the same infotainment system.

Their response was:

"Apple Carplay and Android Auto are not available or offered on the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. This feature cannot be ordered from factory or presently installed after the vehicle has left the factory."

I further queried about whether there were any future plans including a retrofit option at some point in the future and they responded with:

"As expressed, FCA US LLC and Fiat have at this time expressed no further information to suggest an ability to update or 'retrofit' current or prior model year radio units with an Apple Carplay functionality. I do regret any disappointment this might cause."

Considering the hardware required is already being sold by Mazda and is a direct fit (replace USB/Aux hub and cable) then it would be nice to see an announcement from Fiat about Apple Car Play support.

I would recommend 124 owners contact their respective Fiat group to continue to request for Car Play.

thanks

I walked a long way last week to the FCA booth at CES just to share my disappointment of being unable to connect to CarPlay and Android Auto. A product specialist said it would be included in new Fiat’s but they would not make any changes to the nav system of ‘17s and ‘18s. I asked why they couldn’t just release a mod like Mazda did, she said it was not happening and seemed disinterested in talking about further. But what does she know. Right?
