Insiders have told Edmunds that FIAT will in fact be using their own 1.4L in the 124...

Industry sources tell Edmunds that Fiat's 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine likely will be under the hood of the 124 Spider. The MX-5 Miata is powered by Mazda's 155-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Both vehicles will be assembled at Mazda's Hiroshima, Japan plant.

The Fiat 1.4 Multiair is an excellent engine. It's actually 1368ccs, they rounded up. It features forged pistons and a forged steel crank. It can handle a lot of power. Right now at our shop our daily driver test mule 500 Abarth is putting out a shade over 250whp, and we are still turning it up higher.

This engine is very reliable, gets great fuel economy and is pretty easy to work on. I think it's a perfect choice for this car.
