The FIAT 124 Spider will be joined by a Abarth halo model, eventually...

FCA executives have confirmed that the 124 will eventually spawn a high strung Abarth derivative. “You like performance? There will be an Abarth version,” said Alfredo Altavilla, Fiat Chrysler Group’s chief operating officer.

Altavilla called the FIAT "comfortable" and the Abarth, "extreme".

And extreme it will be if the rumors hold true. A detuned version of the 237 hp 1.75L Turbo from the sublime Alfa Romeo 4C should feature 200 bhp, which would theoretically be good for a similar power to weight as Porsche's Boxster GTS. 0-60 in 5 flat? YES PLEASE.

Look for the exterior frippery to be just as hot as what lurks under the bonnet. Large air dams, carbon splitters and skirts, Abarth alloys and a far meaner stance should round out the package.

From the horses mouth

“Abarth is all about performance and so I’ve told my team to stop working on colours and trims. Any new version of an Abarth car should deliver some sort of a performance enhancement, otherwise it is useless.

“We went too far with the Punto Abarth – the Punto is a family car and the Abarth version was seen as a bit of a stretch. I stopped production of it 15 months ago because it was not targeted at the true Abarth customer – an Abarth has to be something special and a family car cannot offer this.”
