front license plate install

I noticed three dimples in the front of the car where a plate would mount. I'm not keen on having holes drilled in the car and wonder if anyone has located an aftermarket bracket. Rev9 already has two alternatives for the ND Miata, given the similarity between the cars I wonder if there is any cross-over between the cars. I don't want to carry the front plate on the dash or pay the $150 fine either.

I did not want to drill holes too. So I ended up with like the picture.
I bought plastic license plate bracket at Amazon ($9) and attach it to lower grill using zip ties.
Really like this setup...
Is the plate still firmly in place? I may try this.

I agonized about drilling holes....boy did I. I am not a front plate fan at all but in CA it is required.

However! I did provide emotional support for her. "...you're only going to feel three slight pinches...", "This will only hurt for a minute", "Think of it as a little tattoo.", and Finally, .."suck it up, here it comes!"

After much deliberation I feel that the factory position is as optimal as you can get from an airflow and looks perspective. Just my opinion.

I just got my plates.... We need to run front plate in NJ... Has anyone see/tried/had thoughts on this? https://www.youtube.com/embed/BOu4AIOtW2E?rel=0 You are supposed to drill 2 holes on underside (Better then drilling bumper). If I go this route, will use double sided tape short term.

If I get stopped for not displaying plate, I can say I forgot to flip it up after a show or track day.

Forgetful excuse #1, blaming it on someone else is backup excuse (Wife, Service Center, Car Wash, Etc).

Racer, who makes this device? Do you have make and model info?

Steve.
Not sure which is the on in the link... but here is similar made by Altec. https://www.amazon.com/Show-Go-License-Plate-Holder/dp/B001E4E0ZW

Actualy like this one better as it does not have the pull lip in the front.

I'll take a look, thanks.

One year and 8000 miles traveled and not a single glance from Law Enforcement at my naked front bumper, knock on wood.

I'll save some people time and money... The above solution (By Altec) does not work on our cars unless you are willing to cut the 1/4" lip we have under the car. The mount requires a bracket to lay flat under the car and it is about 7" long. Instead of cutting the panel I know I can make it flat by putting washers between the underbody and the mount but that is going to make the whole assembly sit lower and make it stick out like a sore thumb. Don't waste your time. I ordered it via AMAZON Prime, it's going back tomorrow.
3 Front Plate Options... Your Opinion?

I am evaluating a couple options for front plate. I must run a front plate for DMV Inspection and day-to-day (Apparantly Many Police Departments Locally Use Plate Readers).

Option 1: https://www.slybrackets.com/store/#!/$49-99-AFTER-CREDIT-See-details-BOZZmount-MG-UNIVERSAL-TRUE-No-drill-Front-License-Plate-Bracket-Mesh-Grille-Mounting/p/80520617/category=0 I like the location of this plate, it won't hide the red lip. After I pass inspecton, I may trim the plate a little and recess it into the grill area.
Downside, if I recess it, will restrict airflow the most.
Plus: Does not hide red lip and in m view is best location-wise

Option 2: http://bigmikesperformanceparts.com/2017-2018-fiat-124-spider-abarth-sns124/
Downside: This hides the red lip, minor drilling
Plus: Is removable

Option 3: https://www.deyemeracing.com/Project_Mamba/BA1TagBktW_install.htm
Downside: Same appearance as #2, but not removable
Pro: Sturdy, least expensive

I'm happy to say I've been running with this "no-drill" front plate solution for almost a year now and absolutely no problems with it. Plus, if you decide to go with a front plate, it looks pretty good, too.

Here's what I did to mount a front plate. I did something similar to a Mustang GT and it worked fine. Here's what I needed.

1) A Plateguard license frame.

https://www.amazon.com/Carshow-Autom...se+plate+frame

I really like this frame. Classy, simple, no visible mounting tabs. The license plate just slips in and locks into the frame. What I really like about it, though, is that it has a back to it with four tabs on the back you can run twist ties into, for fastening to the grill. Take a look at the pics at Amazon to get an idea what I'm talking about. I got my best price for it on eBay, though.

2) Nite Ize Gear Ties. These things work great, are rubber coated, and work well as "twistie" ties. I went with four of them, one for each, Plateguard tab in black, to blend in with the grill. The license plate fit will be a little tight with the ties in the tabs but it will fit and it makes for an even more secure locking of the plate within the frame.

Just twist one into each Plateguard tab and then into the grill. You can center the license plate over the front fender bar, pretty much where it would be if you drilled the dreaded holes. Gasp! Two gear ties into the bottom grill and two ties into the top grill.

3) Foam weatherstripping, with the adhesive backing. I just placed some foam weatherstripping on the back of the Plateguard, to protect the front bumper.

The plate's securely in place on Little Spidee and, best of all, no holes required.

Just pick up a mountingg bracket from PeP Boys and attached it to the lower grill using zip ties, done

I may go that route eventually, although if I do, I may trim the plate a bit to fit better and to impead airflow a bit less. Mounted my plate on bumper with double sided HD foam tape, a slim frame Carshow Plateguard reccomneneded by FSpide) and a zip tie or two. Posted a couple pics somewhere on this site.

I have been using something similar to option one. Not exactly sure if it's the same brand. Very well could be.

No problems. I like the peace of mind that I am compliant with Illinois law.
I wonder if the plate in front of the lower grille would block some air from entering. People with intercooled cars usually do not want anything blocking the grille opening, so as much air as possible goes to the intercooler. We are working with another company on a mount that places the plate to the side. It uses the tow hook mount. See pic for the test version. The final one will be slightly different.
PS.: I found that plate in a Georgia junkyard about 20 years ago.
This appears to be the wrong mounting bracket for the Spider. The Spider bracket places the license plate further to the center of the vehicle, where it is more aesthetically pleasing and not blocking the headlighting.
