But us Brits will often pronounce it "Mary Land" rather than the American "Merl-nd" (as best as I can do to show the pronunciation)

I'm with you in spirit lol. I lived in Ocean City (Worcester County) for 12 years back in the late 80s thru 98. Then Delaware for 10 years before saying the heck with this weather and hightailing it to Florida.
