Hey, since getting back to work after the whole pandemic thing I've realized that I can probably buy myself a proper car and the obvious choice seems to be a 124 spider abarth. I've test driven several and decided I need one in my life. My plan has been to save up like $3k-$5k down and get a nice low mileage example. Thing is, about 3 hours from me right now, there's an example that, while it looks new, is sitting pretty at 162k miles but is up for only $15,880, meaning I could put $1k down and still have a lower monthly bill. Keep in mind I'm young and I have no credit so I'm going to be looking at a high monthly regardless. my question is, to those of you who have owned these cars and driven them to these kinds of high mileage, is this a bad idea? Should I just wait the 6-7 months it'll take to save up the extra few grand or should I jump on this deal?

the listing if anyone is interested

162K mi? Is that a typo? That might be the highest mileage 124 in existence.

I bought a 2018 Classica less than a year ago with 32K mi or so for $16,200. Used cars have gone nuts but that seems extreme. Maybe look for a better deal or let the used car market settle back to more sane levels.

not a typo. and it's the cheapest within 400 miles by $6000. I really do want an abarth tho and for that the difference is over $8000

Since the used car market is over-inflated now due to Covid and the chip shortage, I’d suggest waiting a few months to let the market calm down. The price for the car you’re looking at would normally be in the $10-12K range with those kind of miles.

you're probably right. I'm just impatient. I just bought a $3k '08 eclipse gs and it's been a disaster. I want to drive up to canada and see my family but I don't trust what I have and I've wanted to buy a 124 since I started shopping for them last year

I’m sorry to hear this. My neighbor bought her daughter an Eclipse of this vintage and it didn’t last two years. She drove it like an old lady but it’s a crap car!

I’m surprised to see one that even has that many miles, but that sounds like a horrible deal to me. I got my Classica for 17k with only 17k miles on it, and I was 19. It also already had a set of advanti storm s1’s on it. I only put down 1500 too.

the market is brutal right now unfortunately. I got an 08 eclipse with 170k miles and 1k worth of problems for 3300. I still hate myself for it lol

alright so how about this then. Those of you who have classicas. Do you regret not springing for a higher trim? I know it's only an inch smaller wheels and 4 less horsepower and an lsd but part of me really wants that abarth for the looks and the badge and that exhaust. I've driven a lusso as well and it was fine but idk maybe i'm just stubborn

Fiat’s are meant to be cheap and fun. When I was shopping, there was nothing near the price range of that classica, especially considering it had such low miles and two years of warranty left. Newer civics with 30k miles were selling for 5k more than this car, and the cheapest new car on the market was only like 2k less than this fiat. I love my fiat because it was a steal, don’t overpay for one. If the time and price are right you won’t regret your purchase, but there’s no way in hell I’d pay more than 25k for one of these, and that’s only if it’s fully optioned and practically new. At that point you could easily find a used c5, m3 or more. But at 15-17k with low miles it’ll probably be a better deal than any other car that still has manufacturers warranty.

Definitely not. I think the Classica looks the best and is the best choice if you are going to be making upgrades, the abarth is the best stock car, and the lusso isn’t attractive to me. The Classica leaves you with lots of money for upgrading parts and tuning the car, but if you wanna keep it stock you’ll probably itch for an abarth.

NO WAY! Are you crazy?
For this money you can get a decent fun sports car!
I hope your family kidnaps you and takes you to some deprogramming place before you do this. The only benefit is to the guy unloading this car.
Best regards
Pete

I am definitely the guy that keeps my cars stock. And if anything I'd itch for that scorpion badge. I'd also love the recarro seats if I can get my hands on one of the few with that option

they do exist in the 21-25k range right now (with lower miles; 17-40k). That's what I've started saving for. I just got excited and trigger happy at the cheap one lol I guess I'm still a 5yo when it comes to this sort of thing
