So, I’ve heard of this “MOT” referenced not only on this forum, but on others that I partake in. Is that the equivalent of our yearly inspection (both emissions and safety) on this side of the Pond?
Can you enlighten us?
Thanks.

Hi from the East side of the big pond!

The MOT test is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required in Great Britain for most vehicles over three years old.

Mine is booked in for its 5 year mot in a couple of weeks. I will be keen to see if they advise on the condition of the brake pipes. Last year they noted them for being corroded, covered in grease or other material. I checked them over and I couldn’t see any corrosion. They are sleeved with an outer plastic material so I can only assume that was the reason but will be interesting to see if they note it again.

It's pretty thorough - MOT Checks

Sophia's MOT, 6 years, 34,000miles, done on 3rd May. Pass no advisories.
Full service done at the same time including cam belt, auxiliary, belts water pump and belt tensioner.
Six years so cam belt due and there was a slight "weep" from the water pump and as the cam belt kit comes with a water pump and tensioner it made sense to do it all at the same time.
Independent Fiat agent used them a few times and I trust them.
The cost - don't ask! Could have had an all in ten day cruise.

"MoT" stands for "Ministry of Transport" which was what the current day Department for Transport was called when they first introduced the UK annual test in 1960 for cars 10 years or more years old. New cars now need their first test after 3 years, but cars over 40 years old are exempt from needing a test. There was a proposal to make it 4 years for the first MoT or to have tests every two years, but no change yet. Cost is up to £54.85. Here's my first MoT test result at 3 years (delayed from May 2020 due to Covid):

5-year service & MoT next week.
Transmission fluid change on this one.
Belts is next year.
@spidersmx - last year me independent mechanic spent a good deal of time cleaning down and re-sealing the brake pipe ends. He reckons the last 1/4” or so isn’t so well protected.

Emissions, due to a leaky joint between the Ragazzon centre pipe and rear box:

Exhaust Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (8.2.1.2 (c))

Fixed by putting a gasket there, been fine ever since. If low mileage were to be a reason to fail, it would have failed every year so far!

Mine has passed all 3 MOTs at 3,4 and 5 years old, but on the last 2 tests it had an advisory for play/wear in offside rear pin bearing / bush. The car has now covered 48500miles and is booked in with Roddisons (leading MX5/Miata specialists) in Sheffield who will replace the bushes on both sides with poly items. At £450 + VAT its not cheap, but its much less eye watering than the cost of a new complete hub that Fiat suggest is the only option. The idiots who insist on building speed bumps every in Derbyshire have a lot to answer for 😡

Nope unfortunately failed on fluctuating rear brakes showing 30-40% variation. So booked in for investigation and repair and retest a week on Monday 😣

That is unfortunate and rather costly..... I'm at ~42K miles at the moment and I'll keep an eye on the bushes. Out of interest is you Spider stock/modded ?

No mods and it’s done around 44000 miles, I had noticed some vibration when breaking so explains it I suppose, shame I didn’t notice on the test drive last June when I bought it. I’m too used to buying new cars, lesson learnt!

Its modified with a stage 1 remap and a custom exhaust but only in the last 12 months so these have had little do do with the bush wear as it was an advisory on the MOT from 12 months prior to the mods
