Hi guys,

I've recently picked up my Abarth 124 and whilst every time I hear the exhaust I giggle like a schoolgirl, I'm left feeling a little bit flustered with the entertainment system, namely when using USB.

I'm using a 64GB Sandisk Ultra Fit (this one) and only have roughly 3,500 songs loaded onto it but the load times when booting up the car can be horrible - anything up to 2 minutes to get any audio playback at all and then another couple of minutes to be able to access any of my playlists/artists/albums etc through the options in the category list, which is especially frustrating when it resets itself and goes back to playing the first song loaded onto the USB and I can't change it!

Is this normal behaviour? When using Bluetooth everything is virtually instant, have I bought a duff USB or am I forced to use Bluetooth and live in a world where I can never see any album art again? :p

Late reply, and by now you've likely figured it out. The Infotainment system in our vehicles is painfully lacking in memory, and with the USB sticks with music, it wants to load and attempt to index the whole thing before you can do anything with it. If my case, rather than one huge stick with all my music on it, I decided to go with a dozen Verbatim ClickIt 8 GB sticks, each of which is labelled with a particular genre of music or mix variety. Since these are small sticks that clip onto a sheet of paper like, well, a paperclip, I just have a bunch of them slid on a business card and I toss that in the little cubby in the centre console beside the volume knob. With the smaller data size, they boot up fairly quickly.

In my Classica with the base level radio (not the radio in the Abarth or Lusso), I am using the Cruzer(?) USB 2.0 version of that same mini drive the OP uses, I have about the same number of songs, and it's a matter of a few seconds from ignition to music from the speakers. Apparently the base radio just plays how I want it to play rather than trying to do the thinking for me like the advanced info-tainment system wants to do.

Imagine - I'm currently trying to use a 128Gb Kingston USB 3.0 and it's like getting kicked in the shins. Worse, it resets to the first song each time I start the car.
Honestly I'm about to give up and just stream from my phone.

...and don't even get me started about trying to play audio books. When I was doing my cross-continent trip in June, I had a couple of 8 GB sticks loaded with audio books to listen to while I was driving. For love or money, I couldn't get them to be recognized, and I honestly wasn't spending the time to figure it out then. Since then, I've now discovered that I have to make a change in audio settings to indicate that the source I'm playing is audio book content, and not music files. Okay, that works, but why so convoluted a process? Lord have mercy...

Hi Everyone,
I just thought I would add some helpful information about using a USB flash drive that may come in handy:
- 32 GB Max (will not read over 32 GB)
- No password or encrypted USB flash drives
- All music must be in .MP3 or .WMA format
- Pictures must be in .jpeg format (not .jpg)
- Picture size 240x158 pixels
- Music from iTunes is not a compatible format (MP4 or AAC) and is not reliable at certain times, which means it may work time to time but it will fail and will not work the next time connected to the radio due to the format and Apple’s policies
- Music from iTunes converted to .mp3 may not work all the time
- Put music in folders (up to 8 folders and no more than 255 songs in each folder)

I hope this helps!

Lydia, the 64 gig Sandisc chip is working perfectly in my Classica base level radio, with one caveat- I cannot have more than 250 (or is it 255?) files (mp3 songs) in an individual file folder. So, I have lots of file folders to store the music. It works very well for me.

Lydia, when will we get Apple CarPlay like the rest of the car industry?

Thanks.

I don't know. I have a 32 GB sandisk (one of those really tiny ones) in a USB slot. It has 5000 tracks in a single folder and it's ready to play within 30 seconds of starting the car. All are mp3's. I do have a few of Ameridan's tweaks enabled, but I'm not sure why that would matter.

By the way, I see there is a USB Audio Mod Tweak in the Mazda AIO package (version 2.8.0 or 2.8.1) that is compatible with our firmware. I've tried it out and like it. I could package it up, but it is easy as-is. Just be careful not to install some of the other tweaks.

** Patches The USB Audio App With These Mods:

Long press (click hold) folders/select ALL songs to play
Adds new icon for USB root menu on the UMP control
Removes “More like this” button from UMP control
Adds folders button to UMP control
Set folders and song list icons correctly (were switched) on UMP control
Removes trailing “/” character from folder names for list control and title of now playing
Adds folder and song icons to the list control
Adds folder and playlist icons to now playing
At the beginning or each track, shows*Artist - Title*in a status-bar notification, even on other screens.

It just might help load times too ;)

Have to say I have no issues with a 32gb Cruzer and around 2000 songs. I'd say maybe 30 seconds for phone to connect / download and usb to sort itself so within a minute of setting off everything is sorted.

Quicker than my partners VW actually!
