Okay. Full disclosure. I was wasting time watching video clips on WeChat channels (for those not familiar with what I'm talking about, this section of WeChat could be considered the Chinese equivalent of TikTok videos... but I think TikTok is Chinese too, so maybe they're the same thing, but on different delivery platforms... but I digress....)

I came across one that showed a phone mount attached to a sun shield for the infotainment system of a car... sold as one combined unit. Seemed interesting, but after wasting another hour searching, I haven't come across anything that fits our cars (or the Mazda siblings that use the same Infotainment System). What I did find was a US seller of a centre dash mount phone holder. I'm attaching two links.

The first is the one they sell for our Spiders. The second is the one for the Mazda, and I include it because it has some decent customer photos showing it installed and holding a phone. Also, the Mazda version shows the screen found in the Abarth. The one shown in the Fiat product ad is, I think, the smaller screen that comes in some of the other Spider models?

There's a video showing installation in the Spider, and I have to admit I'm a bit torn as to how I feel about it. From a structural integrity aspect, it looks like once in place it's not going anywhere anytime soon. The downside is that you have to pry up a couple of panel gaps to seat the thing, and when done, you can see a deformity in the gap. The other thing is that it parks in front of the centre vent. That doesn't bother me too much as I don't think the centre vent does a heck of a lot to begin with, so IMHO, no great loss in return for a solid phone mount. Anyway, if anyone is looking for a phone mount, this might be an option for you. So, without further adieu, here's the links to the product:

I was between this and the Cravenspeed mount that sits in the passenger cup holder, but decided on this a month ago. I kept incorrectly installing it, causing it to fall off during acceleration, but once it was in, it stayed in place. Pro Clip sells in 2 pieces; one to mount to the car (only 1 option) and one that bridges the mount to the phone (multiple options with different features). I ended up with a wireless charger built into the mount for a cheaper price than the Cravenspeed, so that’s what led me to this mount. I placed mine all the way to the left, covering the hazard button but leaving the air vent unobstructed. If I needed to use the hazards, I could still access the button my sliding my finger behind the mount. So far am very happy with it! I upgraded my shift knob to GWR’s BBK, so if I’m not careful during shifts, the top of my hand can hit the bottom of my phone, but other than that it’s flawless

No phone mount here. Wireless CarPlay so the phone lives wherever I toss it. If it needs charging on a longer trip, I’ve got the cable from the 12v plug up under the passenger footwell to use.

I have tried a few different mounts over the years and have found this to be the best solution by far. The 124 is my 4th car to use it.

I focus on driving this beautiful car and enjoying the sights and sounds that surround me instead of taking glances at some electronic screen. I shove my phone face down in the nook in front of the gearshift or in the cubby between the seats.

I did the high-powered magnet glued behind the dash trick, and it works awesome. Phone just sticks to the dash. Hidden Magnetic Phone Mount - MX-5 Miata Forum

No, you'll have company. I'll be in that small club, along with a few other regulars here. :) My phone mount is my shirt pocket. When I'm driving, the only thing I use it for is phone calls, and the hands free deals with that. In the instances where I need to charge the phone while driving, it sits on the passenger seat. As others have mentioned, distracted driving laws here in Canada (varies by province), can net you an instant $500 fine if you're caught mucking around with your phone while behind the wheel.

Same here:

CXXIV's 2017 FIAT Abarth

I've tried several solutions and am content to have settled on this one. Very solid, doesn't vibrate, nor shift with use. I do see that slight bend in the line where it's been inserted in the gaps, but accept that. And one benefit of it being right in front of that vent is that it stays cool even when charging and the sun is shining on it.

Why mess around with mounts.

Install Apple CarPlay, connect with a USB cable, phone in the obvious slot in front of the gearshift. Everything works including charging the phone. Easy.

Android Auto......no hardware needed and a 2 minute software install. AA wireless also.
Carplay.......hardware to buy and install and software upgrade.
Depending what he wants one route much cheaper and easier than the other.
