Why mess around with mounts.
Install Apple CarPlay, connect with a USB cable, phone in the obvious slot in front of the gearshift. Everything works including charging the phone. Easy.
You kind of missed the entire point of the thread. It's all about an option if someone is looking for a phone mount... not about whether or not a phone mount is needed. Nothing to do with whether folks are using Carplay or AA. Irrelevant in the context of the thread.

Personally, I don't use AA or Carplay, nor do I want a phone mount. But while doing some web surfing I came across something I thought might be a potential option for someone who does want a mount. Hence why I posted the thread.

How did you get car play /android auto on your system i have 2018 and doesn't have them
If you are considering installing CarPlay you need to be aware that this was never offered by Fiat. Since our OEM infotainment system is pretty much the same as the Mazda system, with some rebranding done, a few years ago a group of Fiat owners figured out how to install the Mazda AA/CarPlay upgrade kit into their Spiders. As has been mentioned, if you only want Android Auto there is a simpler way to do it, but if you’re looking for CarPlay, it’s a more involved process. You should read this article with full instructions first. You can then decide whether or not you want to do the upgrade. If you decide to do the project, once you have the parts and the software, the process takes about four hours to do.

First question, what kind of phone do you have? Second, are you ok with something that is easy, easy to remove and not expensive?

Not being glib…if you have a newer iPhone with magnetic backing…not the technical name but it’s early here…you can get a holder that slips onto your middle vent louver and is magnetized. Works through apples cases as well. It may through others…I don’t have personal knowledge of that. If not, get a Kenu holder, also for the vent, for usually less than $30. I had mine for six years in my spider before I changed, as I got a phone with the magmatic backing.

My trusty Kenu and my Belkin. This Belkin will charge your phone while you’re using it. You can get it without that option as well. We’ve used both in our family cars. Both will support the larger sized iPhones as well.
Just my 2 cents…

Android Auto......no hardware needed and a 2 minute software install. AA wireless also.
Carplay.......hardware to buy and install and software upgrade.
Depending what he wants one route much cheaper and easier than the other.
Only if you have an Android phone. No good if you are an Apple fanatic.

For a decent phone holder I got the following. Sits very comfortably between my steering wheel and driver's door mounted on the screen. Also easy to route a USB cable to it from a USB port and you don't see it. Works a treat as a phone holder which is quite discreet.
