So you mean side exits, or actual side pipes that run along below the rocker panels? Either way, I haven't seen that done on this car.

Just cut a hole in the hood and turn the downpipe in to an up-pipe. Probably cheaper to get a second hood from a junkyard than fabricating an exhaust.

Buddy's dad had a 427 Cobra growing up. Those leg burns are no joke.

Nothing is impossible, have done it on NC generation Miata race cars we built...but not going to happen in practical manner on street friendly ND/Fiat 124.

Look under your car at the frame rails and just imagine what happens when you go over a speed bump with the pipe there and it gets squished flat. Now look past the frame rails at the extensive tunnel the factory designed to carry the exhaust and the driveshaft and transmission, hard to get away from that design unless you start to cut through stuff which we did on the car below (no passengers allowed because the 3 inch pipe runs through passenger foot well area). We did it for perfect balance, that exhaust system that met Laguna Seca limits went a long way to balance my weight as driver.

Dodge Viper had the exhausts running inside these massive door jams.

All I can remember was you better be lithe and nimble to (a) be able to get over the huge hump, and (b) avoid burning your legs.

Viper is an interesting example as they were made with side....and rear. Reasons for the change from side included that many owners ultimately came to not appreciate the side pipes because burning your ankles gets old, and sound was not great since you sit not in the center but with your left ear essentially over just 5 cylinders of sound, and thus a lot of comments about how the early cars sound like a milk truck.

Funny thing is, turbos are actually great mufflers. Between the catalytic converter and the turbo if you just have enough exhaust pipe to give the exhaust gas time to cool a bit you are good to go.
