The color code on the door of my Argento Grigio (aluminum) 124 is 38P, which is a Mazda code (liquid silver). I just ordered some from a Mazda dealer online ($12) and will see how well it matches on a driver's side door-edge chip which the dealer kindly provided...
I tried to find this paint online and ran into a problem. They want me to give a year and model for the Mazda of my choice. The 2016 Miata does not have that color. What is the secret for finding this color?

Anyone have any luck finding a source for touch-up paint? Or have any luck with matching Mazda paint to their Spider?
I got a touch-up paint stick for my meteor-grey Lusso from the local Mazda dealer, it matched perfectly. Looked up the code on the Mazda site for the current MX5.

Thx, S.

Good to know! Did you base the paint off the color listed on the door tag, or were they just able to match the color in person?
Neither. IIRC, I had read somewhere on this forum that at least some of the paints were identical between the MX5 and 124. The MX5 grey on the Mazda site and in person at the dealer looked close enough, so I figured for $10-ish I'll give it a try. If there is a difference, then I can't tell.

Hope that helps, S

Interesting! I've got a Rosso, so may have to dig around a bit more to figure out if it uses one of the old MX5 paints.

Rosso has been around for a while, right? That should be one of the easier colors to get I suppose. If someone gets some info on the Gun Metal color that is used on the wheels, etc. please post.

In regards to Touch Up Direct, they were unable to match a couple bike colors for me in the past but they were happy to refund me after several times trying to get it right.

At least from looking at the mazda and fiat site, the Mazda 'soul red' and Fiat 'rosso red' look pretty darn close. If it was me, I'd take the 124 to the Mazda dealer (for grins =) ), park next to a red Mazda, and compare. If close enough, buy a $10 touch-up pen, put some on cardboard, and hold it up against the rosso.

Thx, S

Bob Z - good to know about your experience with Touch Up Direct - sounds like a decent place to source from, even if the color doesn't end up matching.

sl_austin - excellent advice! I'll definitely try that out. A soul red MX5 driver pulled up next to me at a light a few days ago and was so excited to see a Spider - it was the first one he'd seen on the road. I guess we're part of that Miata family now (even if our car is way better looking ;) ).

Anyone not willing to travel to a dealers that say... far away, might be wise in ordering it online because as soon as you get a scratch, patching it immediately is the best thing you can do, even if the patch look horrible. Horrible temporary patch beats rust!

For my Giulietta QV, I ordered a set from Chipex. I had the Etna Black, which had gold/bronze flakes alongside a purple-black tinge. It was quite hard to find a touch-up pen, so I ordered the Road Rash kit.

I can confirm that the colors matched up evenly, and the kit was intuitive and easy enough to use. It came with a blending solution, and I probably filled in 10-15 obvious chips in the bumper. They were almost not noticeable. It wasn't cheap, but the kit was well worth it.

I've just ordered a set for my Abarth - supposed to take ownership this week, and looking forward to it. http://www.chipex.com/

I also found a similar kit from this website https://colorndrive.com/en/touch-up...nco-turini-1975-163c,160059/details?year=2016

Never used them before, but the components look similar. I would have ordered if I didn't click "buy" too quickly on the Chipex website.

Frustratingly, my chipex order did not come through (credit card declined).

Couldn't get through to the guys at Chipex as to why the payment didn't go through, so I bit the bullet and went with the colorndrive mob instead. Ordered on the 11th April, and package was delivered from Germany to Australia via DHL (free shipping) within 4 days!

The package smelled of the paint shop and I had thought that something must have been broken, but it was just probably the air from the paint shop. Unbelievable! Product looked very similar to the old Chipex kit that I had for the Giulietta, although perhaps the Chipex kit was slightly better in terms of the way it was packaged. It was like buying an Apple product (the Chipex) and an earlier Samsung S3 / S4 product (the Colorndrive), but for a much cheaper price, and such quick delivery, I have no complaints.

Photos attached.

Quasi unrelated, but if you get a credit card declined situation, contact your credit card's 1.800 number. They now tend to use automated fraud protection algorithms, and I find they trigger on more things than I'd like... but if this is what has happened, they can fix it such that as soon as you attempt the purchase a second time it will flow smoothly and complete for you.

My almost-four-week old Spider got a small chip on the rear passenger side fender, right where the fender folds into the wheel well. You could bare see it, but it is a prime location to develop rust.

I ordered a Mopar paint pen on Amazon; it arrived a couple days later. Followed the instructions on the box: used the abrasive end to smoothen out any rough surfaces and applied a very small amount using the brush.

You can’t really see anything any more; the color match is perfect.

Sorry, got it on eBay not Amazon.

My Spider is red; here’s a link to the listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/292538045736

Per the instructions on the box, I shook the pen well for 30-60 seconds to make the contents were mixed properly.
