It's an interesting point and certainly launching new editions or bringing out ones with engine upgrades a year or two down the line will certainly keep things fresh and I hope buyers coming back for more.

Interesting but slightly idealized and skewed. See the Mustang and Camaro are bad benchmarks because they actually generate far more volume then most of the vehicles cited.

In the last ten years the Miata peaked at 16,897 sales in 2006. Coincidentally that was also the Mustangs best year in the last decade, they sold 166,530 cars. Its far easier for ford to pour money into the mustang as its 90% advantage in volume makes it far more likely those costs will be amortized.
