Sorry if there is a post I searched and can't find it. Kind of a "vague" question but...

I'd love to get educated on the difference between our engine and the Miata. When I talk about the Spider some folks say "yeah thats great about being built in Japan but the engine...".

I just want to be able to come back with some facts/info. Right now I just say I got 4 years or 50k miles not to worry about it.

Thanks!

Well engine was designed by the same engineers that designed Ferrari engines. Apparently the only reason it wasn’t used was the multi air would not allow revs high enough to meet Ferrari’s expectations. If you read through just about any build here you will find these engines are pretty robust but do have their limits. The Miata guys are just jealous they don’t have a turbo!

Hi Mickey....First thing I considered (worried about) when seeing the 124 Spider was it having Italian engine and electrics...but mind put at rest once I read that the underpinnings and electrics / electronics are mostly Japanese and that the MultiAir engine was small engine of the year 2010....and still going strong. I owned (and loved having) two Mazda MX5's NB's, everything about them at the time was right for me, however.....juicy and emissions were minuses, working the gearbox though was a treat. The 124 Spider returns 40 odd miles per gallon on Premium fuel and the emissions well acceptable, the insurance costs also, well down on the MX5,so for your mates asking, I's never knock the Mazda engine unit but certainly be proud of the engine of the year title..and having that Turbo, Cheers

One other thing Matey.......That photo above.....I hope that you are aware that since meeting and marrying his wife young Harry has got as bad at suing folk as she is, "The Queen" God Bless Her on the other hand is likely to ask you round for a Tea Party......

A quick read that should help you out. Engine found in Our Spider, Fiat 500, Dodge Dart (RIP), and In a jeep model I believe.
