Steering wheel compatibility w/miata

I think I’m going to attempt a steering wheel upgrade. I’m pretty sure that the aftermarket wheels that are for the Miata will also fit the spider.

Are there any issues with this, ie airbag fitting, wiring of the buttons etc?

Any thoughts on the process? I watched 2 videos and I think it’s doable! Haha.

Not knowing what wheel you're looking at or thinking about, but here's something to keep in the back of your mind if and when you do eventually change wheels.

I came across this very useful little tid-bit on the Good-Win-Racing website during my early days of investing and trying to decide whether or not I wanted to swapout my stock Abarth steering or not and if so for what. As it turned out this did apply to, although I did not get it from Good-Win-Racing, the steering wheel I eventually did get. All else was a straight forward swap from the stock OE wheel to the wheel I eventually decided to go with, which was a flat bottomed Autoexe wheel with noon marker from REV9.

The wheel from REV9 I have:

Note: I removed the two pins and smoothed the area where they had been using a Dremel tool with a small cutting bit.

@2020 Nordamericano thank you that’s helpful. I was actually looking at a Cipher on eBay :

I’m more concerned I’m going to break a trim piece or mess something up in the process. I wish you could get wheels with the buttons and airbag and just pay a core charge and ship yours back!

It’s the same steering wheel only the normal Miata one sucks:

When I had a Miata (ptui!) I swapped out the steering wheel and shifter because the Miata ones are dainty and I have giant hands.

If you get one set for Miata it will work fine. It’s worth watching the videos once and going carefully the first time but after you have gotten a feel for where the three clips are subsequent wheel changes are much simpler than the first one.

For aftermarket you reuse your airbag or don’t have one. You often reuse the controls. It’s easier if you pick a wheel that already claims to be compatible with things. The airbag will still have the Fiat/Abarth cover if you use it.
